The experience of motivation
Pleasure in humour, fiction, art of sport, deviance both sexual and violent, psychopathological conditions such as anxiety, depression or obsessionality, religious observance or family arguments - these are psychological, sociological and soscal anthropological phenomena so diverse that a single theory offering to illuminate all of them must be as important as it is controversial.
The theory of psychological reversals is a new theory of motivation, emotions and personality developed by the author in conjunction with Dr K.C.P Smith., a consultant psychiatrist, whichis now attracting wide interest. Central to the theory is its emphasis on the form rather than the content of experience, and the idea that action is mediated by metamotivatioanal states and the swiches these states.
